"The Spirit of the Forest"
by Debra and Dave Vanderlaan
... One of the prettiest
and quite challenging hiking trails
in the Smoky Mountains can be found along the Alum Bluff Cave trail above Gatlinburg. The trailhead is found just a mile or so from Newfound Gap. This is one of the rustic bridges that crosses over the beautiful stream flowing down the rockbed of multiple cascades and small waterfalls along the way. The path turns sharply upwards at this point, entering a cave-like outcropping of huge rocks to follow the rocky trail past scenic overlooks and viewpoints. The Bluff is breath-taking towering hundreds of feet overhead and makes for a wonderful spot for a snack before either continuing the trek on to Mont LeConte or the descent back down along the creek...
