Description
Old Sorghum Press
by Debra and Dave Vanderlaan
... A treasure of an antique found at the Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, an old sorghum press on the porch of one of their oldest cabin buildings. The Folk School is a teaching school of all Appalachian arts and crafts, located in the south western tip of North Carolina. The Columbus Improved sorghum press #12, built by Southern Plow, a subsidiary of Columbus Iron Works in Columbus, Georgia. The original price at the turn of the century was $65 and could produce 60 gallons of juice an hour.
This image was captured on a crisp autumn morning during the Fall Festival, held every year on the first weekend of October on the grounds of the Folk School.
